- From partnership to limited liability company

The company known as Møller & Jochumsen was founded on 16 June 1857. The two founders were a blacksmith and a merchant.

Blacksmith Søren J. C. Jochumsen and merchant Johan P. Møller built a blacksmith and machinery factory on Allégade in Horsens, Denmark. This was a very large undertaking at the time. The project was met with scepticism and the company’s long-term prospects were considered to be poor.

However, Møller & Jochumsen made a good start with general blacksmith work and very quickly moved on to producing steam engines. This was a major activity for the company for many years to come.

The company’s track record is convincing proof of its ability to survive. It has produced a wide variety of steel and machinery products throughout its long history - almost 150 years under various owners. j

The ability to be flexible and to change production to meet new challenges has been a key factor. Two world wars and numerous swings in the economy have meant that the company has had to learn to adapt production to changes in demand.

The company has also had several owners over the years.

When the two founders withdrew from Møller & Jochumsen in 1874, the company was converted into a general partnership.

23 years later, in 1897, Møller & Jochumsen became a limited liability company. In the mid-1960’s, it became a subsidiary of large Danish and German-owned companies. In 1999, the company again became an independent limited liability company, founded by three of its managers.

Thus, as of 1999, the company once again had management with a background in both craftsmanship and finance. The three owners are educated in the metalworking trade, technology and finance.

The company’s name is also, once again, rooted in history. “M&J Industries A/S” is based on the names of the two founders’ Møller and Jochumsen.

The company has been known as M&J in day-to-day operations throughout its history, M&J being an abbreviation of Møller & Jochumsen, the company’s name for the first 135 years (to which I/S and then A/S were later added).

The name was changed for the first time in 1992, but only briefly. The company was renamed Niro Separation A/S, and six years later when separation products were sold off, it became Niro Industries A/S. In 2001, the company again took on the familiar M&J name - M&J Industries A/S.
